this is a really boring, pictureless post...but a real nice story nonetheless.
we have had some pretty chilly weather here the last few days...and by chilly i mean freezing. i'm pretty sure one day we had a high of 42 degrees. oh, with rain. my favorite combination...not. i would get home from work and want to put layer upon layer of clothing on and do nothing. so that's exactly what i did. it was awesome.
i then remembered that turning the furnace on would probably raise the temperature of my house enough to where i'd be comfortable. (i think i was in denial that i was turning the furnace on so early in October.)
i wandered over to my thermostat, slid the lever to heat and waited for the every familiar smell of burning that radiates when a furnace has been off all summer. i waited....and waited...and waited. all i heard was an annoying humming noise. oh and there was no warm air coming from our vents. at this point our house was a balmy 61 degrees.
i put two and two together and realized there must be a problem. i called our home warranty company and filed a claim. they said the soonest someone could be out there was the next day.
that night i did all i could to make our bedroom a little warmer. i ran a space heater, put towels at the door cracks, put 3 extra blankets on our bed, and changed our pillowcases to flannel. i also slept in slipper socks, sweat pants, a long sleeved shirt, and hooded sweatshirt. i completed the ensemble with a fleece blanket wrapped around my head to keep in some body heat. i looked awesome to say the least. unfortunately, our room was still a wee bit cold....57 degrees to be exact. neither matt nor i slept very well.
i waited anxiously for the repairman to come to our house and solve all of our problems. he showed up and i could have cried i was so happy (am i the biggest wimp you have ever met? the answer is yes...i hate being cold.) he starts poking around and informs us that there just happened to be a dead bird in our fan. i freaked.
how does a bird get into our furnace? good question. i think they just fly right in from outside...or something. i wasn't paying very good attention when he was explaining it. i was too caught up on the idea that we've had a dead bird in our furnace for who knows how long. apparently a lot of birds have this fate. sad. the repairman told us he isn't allowed to remove any fowl from our unit so he turned that over me me and matt. matt tried first and was able to get a portion of the birdie out. he then made me do all the rest...it was traumatizing. i'll spare you the details. the repairman cleaned up the area, put the parts back together and turned the machine on.
it was basically like a fairy tale...with us living happily ever after and all. our house has heat and yesterday i took the best 5 hour nap of my life. it was delightful...and warm....and i loved every minute of it.

Sorry Betsy...I do know how you hate to be cold! I would have been in heaven!! I miss my cold house! Since Reese came along I have to sleep and live in 68-72 degrees! It's killing me! I miss sleeping in 64 degrees! But I will do anything for that cute baby!! I love that you wrapped a blanket around your head!!! Oh and gross...I would have passed on the dead bird retraction for sure! You're a nicer wife than I! My hubby would have had to take care of that solo!
When I went outside I knew that you would be hating it. You are the first person I thought of when I saw snow on the mountains too :) Miss you!
